Alcohol sales lose 'kick' on input cost, taxes

The industry experienced new pressures on its operating margins and sales in the wake of increasing input costs and new excise regime. For the domestic spirits manufacturing industry, the cost of raw materials such as molasses doubled since March. Packaging costs rose by 15-20 per cent. The widening of services tax resulted in 50 per cent new services to be taxed at 12.36 per cent. Besides an increase in labour costs, inflation also played havoc with the operating margins.

In a year that saw inflation touching a 13-year high of 12.82 per cent in August, the 150 million cases beer market grew by 15 per cent, according to All India Breweries Association figures. The wine segment, which has a total market size of around 1.5 million cases, posted even a higher growth rate of 30 per cent, as per International Wines and Spirits Record, while other alcoholic beverages, with a market size of 190 million cases, grew at 15 per cent.

According to a notification issued recently by the state government, local tax on imported liquor costing above Rs 2,000 per bottle will be at the rate of 30 per cent while those sold below Rs 2,000 will attract a tax of 20 per cent. Earlier, the local tax on imported whisky, wines and beer was a flat Rs 300, Rs 150 and Rs 30 per bottle respectively.

Sunil Gavaskar is known for his impregnable defence against the all-time-great West Indies pace battery, but the former opening batsman, who turned 67 on Sunday, had a weakness - glucose biscuits from Amchi Mumbai. This was revealed by his younger sister Nutan at a function organised to mark his birthday by the Legends Club at the Cricket Club of India. "He used to like those biscuits...Parle G gluco biscuits. West Indies was a long way off and (it was a) long tour, so he would like to have those biscuits for his tea or coffee, so whoever was travelling there, we would try and send those packets of biscuits for him," Nutan Gavaskar told reporters.
